Zone 9 News - New Years JOOI Club!

GOOD NEWS!!

Zone 9 will soon have another new JOOI Club - Junior Optimist Octagon International. Gina Hunter who is the leader of the Bicycle Brigade Dancing Group is working with me to convert that group into a JOOI Club. I have already contacted OI and we are on the way!!!

Gina is a member of the Sunset Club, so Sunset will be the sponsoring club. We may have as many as 25 members…yea!!

Most of you already know that we will charter the new JOOI Club that Downtown is sponsoring on Jan. 26th.

To all Zone 9 clubs,

It’s our pleasure to let you know that the Communication for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH) contest this year is on Friday, January 29, at 10 am at the Pinellas Park High School (6305 118th AvenueLargo, FL 33773). The theme this year is "Cyber Communication: Progress or Problem?" The kids from the Pinellas Park High School will be participating as well as kids from the Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf on Icot Boulevard in Clearwater. This is the first year that the Montessori School will be participating and we are very excited to have them be part of this wonderful event.

Since this is the first year the Montessori School is participating, we hope to send two contestants to the Jacksonville Contest on February 6th. Any donation your club can give us for this effort will be greatly appreciated. As the sponsors of the contestant for Zone 9, we pay for gas, hotel room, meals, for the contestant and their family. We hope that many of our fellow Optimists will be able to join us on January 29 at this year's CCDHH contest.

We had 15 members and three guests attend our meeting last week. It was good to see Delmo Faulkner along with Sam and Debbie Bennett back with us. Our guest speaker was Ms. Deborah Hardee, who is a counselor at WHHS, but also in charge of the Foreign Exchange Student Program for the County. She herself has been a sponsor for four years. She told of the requirements to host a student and the responsibilities of the student. The length of stay is either for 5 months or a year. We also had our own Judi Custer speak of her experience with an exchange student this year.

Fred DeLoach reminded members that the Smencils are still available for sale.
Also those who have not paid their dues, they are still due for the 09-10 year
